Process Description
"The Sulphuric Acid is manufactured by using SO2 gas generated during roasting of minerals used to produce Copper / Zinc. Mostly the Sulphuric Acid is produced by using mineral Sulphur or Sulphur recovered during refining of Petroleum. The Sulphur is melted in melter pits where steam coils are fitted with agitator. The molten Sulphur travels slowly for 7 days in the melter pit. The solid impurities settle down and Sulphur purity reaches +99.9%. The Sulphur is pumped into the furnace through steam jacketed vertical Sulphur pump, pipeline and Sulphur gun. The furnace temp is always kept +5000C. The Sulphur catches fire and burns with oxygen to produce SO2. This reaction is exothermic and temp reaches to 850-900Oc. The gas is cooled to 400OC with a waste heat boiler and then filtered for solid impurities in hot gas filter. The SO2 is converted to SO3 with Vanadium Penta Oxide catalyst in the converter with 4 stages. The conversion is also exothermic. The gases are cooled and absorbed in Sulphuric Acid after 3 stages of conversion. The gases are heated to 400OC and fed into 4th stage of converter. The heat of reaction of 2nd and 3rd stage is used to heat the gases again. The remaining SO2 is converted to SO3 in 4th stage. The gases again absorbed in Sulphuric acid and the concentration of Sulphuric Acid increases. The water is continuously added to keep Sulphuric Acid concentration to 98.5%. The Product is transferred to storage tank.
